SELECTING THE CORRECT CRANE FOR YOUR WORK-READY SERVICE TRUCK

Work Trucks

There are many considerations when choosing a new work-ready or custom service truck, but if you break it down it makes it much easier. This checklist can help you choose the correct features for your service truck to keep your operation safe, your costs low and your projects on track.

SELECTING THE CRANE - HOW MUCH WEIGHT WILL NEED TO BE LIFTED AND HOW FAR?

Cranes have different capabilities, extensions and load requirements that must be followed when choosing your particular
application. Service truck cranes are rated by a Foot-Pound (FT-LB) system, which measures the maximum amount of weight
lifted times the distance of the boom. To find out what the FT-LB rating should be, multiple the weight of the maximum load that
will be lifted by the maximum distance the load will need to be moved away from the center line of the crane. The resulting
number is the FT-LB rating size of the crane required.

HOW WILL THE CRANE BE USED?

While an operator might only occasionally use the crane, the job might require that the crane winch run longer than a
couple of minutes continually. The key component to determining whether an operator should use an electric-hydraulic
crane or a full-hydraulic crane is how often the crane is used during a 1-hour period, often referred to as the expected
“duty cycle.” If you’re only occasionally using the crane, an electric-hydraulic crane will work. However, sometimes the
job would require that the crane winch run longer than a couple of minutes continuously (like when pulling underground
water pipes). In this case, a full-hydraulic crane would be more fit for the job.

WHAT SIZE TRUCK DO YOU NEED FOR THE CRANE?

In order to figure out what size truck you need for the crane, you must determine the truck’s gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR),
which is the maximum amount of total vehicle weight - including the weight of the truck and its entire payload - the truck is
able to carry while safely starting and stopping. Each crane has a minimum allowable GVW in which to install a service crane.
